2021-04-25 06:36:18

_wb_
2021-04-25 06:36:44
You don't get float numbers in the tree with it
2021-04-25 06:36:50
The numbers are still ints
2021-04-25 06:36:54
Everywhere in modular
2021-04-25 06:37:10
It is just that they will get interpreted as floats in the end
2021-04-25 06:37:18
For example
2021-04-25 06:37:40
Bitdepth 10 FloatExpBits 3
2021-04-25 06:38:54
That means that the numbers in the end will get interpreted as 10-bit floats, with 1 sign bit (so actually 9-bit 'unsigned' floats because negative gets clamped to zero), 3 exponent bits, and 6 mantissa bits
2021-04-25 06:39:08
In the IEEE way of defining floats
2021-04-25 06:39:57
E.g. bitdepth 16, FloatExpBits 5 are binary16 half floats
2021-04-25 06:40:58
While bitdepth 16, FloatExpBits 8 is bfloat16

Something color transform I think
jjido
2021-04-25 07:27:01
yes exactly
2021-04-25 07:28:27
And with CbYCr:
_wb_
2021-04-25 07:35:14
The way to tame squeeze is to keep the values very close to zero, except for the first 3 channels which are basically an 8x8 R, a 4x4 G and a 4x4 B, in the default color space that is.
2021-04-25 07:36:14
All the rest of the channels (I think there are 48 in total) are squeeze residuals, which means they should be around zero
2021-04-25 07:36:46
Unless you want to get the usual blocky thing you always tend to get
2021-04-25 07:37:22
https://jxl-art.surma.technology/?zcode=Cy4sTU2tSuXSVQhOLVEwNDAAAA%3D%3D
2021-04-25 07:37:27
2021-04-25 07:39:05
The residuals are very large here, causing it to recursively make large diffs at every resolution step
2021-04-25 07:41:26
Something like this is better if you want to avoid the blocky stuff: https://jxl-art.surma.technology/?zcode=Cy4sTU2tSuXKTFNIVrBTMAQxwoEMAy5dheDUEgVdQxArXEFbwRAmZGhgAAA%3D
2021-04-25 07:41:32
2021-04-25 07:42:13
Keep the residuals smallish, keep them around zero (a bit symmetrical, not much more positive than negative or the other way around)
2021-04-25 07:42:54
Then the tendency term also gets a chance to play a role and make things smooth
2021-04-25 07:43:10
And you can get nice textures
2021-04-25 07:44:06
Squeeze is a bit like the Weighted predictor: quite powerful but hard to tame
jjido And with CbYCr:
2021-04-25 07:46:39
This makes me think of a broadcast test pattern on an old CRT TV that is horribly broken - maybe the TV is on fire and melting while still trying to keep the test image on the screen
Scientia What's RCT BTW?
2021-04-25 07:49:45
It means Reversible Color Transform. RCT 1 is YCoCg. The rest are simple color transforms that can be used in lossless compression like subtracting green from R and B, subtracting avg(R,B) from G, etc.
2021-04-25 08:03:33
CbYCr is maybe useful because there for all channels 0 is the mid value (no color gor CbCr and 50% gray for Y)
2021-04-25 08:04:20
Might allow smaller files in combination with Squeeze because you may not need to distinguish first channels from the residual channels
Scientia

One advantage of Squeeze is that you can do somewhat larger images without having to worry about group boundary artifacts
2021-04-26 07:29:37
The last squeeze residuals are only half the image dimensions, and the default squeeze script takes aspect ratio into account, so you can go up to 2048x1024 or 1024x2048 and still every channel fits in the group size

In the bitstream, there is a global tree (that's the one you define in jxl_per_tree) and optionally one per group
2021-04-28 05:15:09
But you can also do everything with the global tree since you can select on group

RCT and modular transforms in general can be global or per group, but the current tool only allows you to do global ones

Hello al ! First, all you JXL are very nice πŸ™‚ Bravo ! I have a very basic question, why "- W 1" creates a 45% "fade" while I would expect soemthing horizontal or vertical ? https://jxl-art.surma.technology/?zcode=c8osSUktKMlQMOfyL8pMzStJLMnMz1Mw5OLiUlDQVQhXMAQA

2) can we do animation ? (like conway game of life)
_wb_
2021-04-29 12:39:07
`-W 1` makes a diagonal gradient because of the edge conditions: in the left-most pixel column, there is nothing on the west, so there W is defined to be equal to N.
2021-04-29 12:39:44
if you do `if x > 0 - W 1 - Set 0` you get the horizontal gradient you'd expect

Regarding animation: yes, jxl can do animation, but no, jxl_from_tree and the online tool do not support creating animations yet. To do a game of life type of animation would be hard because a frame cannot really "see" the previous frame in the sense of accessing its pixels and going in different tree branches depending on the value. A frame can be decoded independently from another frame - though it does get blended over the previous frame(s) so that may be useful for some kinds of animated jxl art.

_wb_
2021-04-29 12:56:07
To do an actual game of life like thing you could in principle make up to 4096 frames using a single hidden reference frame that has that many channels, and then using each of these channels consecutively as the 'alpha' channel for a patch-blend to the actual visible frames. The channels would be able to somewhat access the previous state of the game of life in the MA tree using Prev / PrevErr. That only lets you see the 'old' current pixel though, not its neighbors.
2021-04-29 12:56:40

negative alpha is a funny thing, and the spec actually allows it (if `clamp=false` in the BlendingInfo header field)
2021-04-30 01:21:32
take for example this image
2021-04-30 01:22:00
I can overlay it with 50% alpha and with MINUS 50% alpha to something else
2021-04-30 01:22:14
2021-04-30 01:22:34
on the left is using the usual positive alpha of about 50%
2021-04-30 01:22:52
on the right the alpha channel has a value of -50%
2021-04-30 01:23:44
``` Bitdepth 10 Orientation 3 RCT 1 Alpha NotLast /* bottom layer: misaligned xor pattern */ if c > 2 - Set 1023 if c > 0 - Set 0 if W-NW > -1 if NW-N > -1 if N > 253 - Set 1 - W + 1 - NW + 0 - Select + 1 /* top layer: flame thingie */ if c > 2 if x > 511 - Set 500 - Set -500 if c > 0 if c > 1 if x > 0 - W -1 - Set 511 if y > 0 - N -1 - Set 511 if N > -500 if WGH > 10 - AvgW+N -2 - Weighted -1 - Set 1500 ```
2021-04-30 01:24:09
(won't work in the current tool yet, multi-frame with blending will only be there at the next sync)
2021-04-30 01:27:03
the spec says blending has to be done as follows: `sample = (new_alpha Γ— new_sample + old_alpha Γ— old_rgb Γ— (1 - new_alpha)) / alpha`
2021-04-30 01:28:03
where `alpha = old_alpha + new_alpha Γ— (1 - old_alpha)`
2021-04-30 01:29:03
`old_*` is the bottom layer, `new_` is the top layer, and sample is the blended value
2021-04-30 01:29:18
(oh spec typo: old_rgb should be old_sample!)
2021-04-30 01:30:51
anyway when the bottom layer is opaque (old_alpha = 1) like in this example, it simplifies a bit
2021-04-30 01:31:37
`sample = new_alpha Γ— new_sample + old_sample Γ— (1 - new_alpha)`
2021-04-30 01:31:52
normally alpha would be in the 0..1 range
2021-04-30 01:33:39
but with negative alpha -0.5, you are first multiplying the bottom layer value by 1.5 and then subtracting 0.5 times the overlay value, which is... interesting
2021-04-30 01:36:51
with the RGB set to zeroes in the overlay, you can use this to do both brightening and darkening of the layer below, using positive alpha to darken and negative to brighten.
_wb_
2021-04-30 07:01:02
0 and 2 are the same too
2021-04-30 07:02:38
It's the value of the -C option to cjxl that you're setting
2021-04-30 07:03:47
0 means "do no RCT transform", 1 means YCoCg, any other value N > 1 means 'use RCT number N-2'
2021-04-30 07:04:10
In the bitstream syntax, YCoCg happens to be 6
2021-04-30 07:04:24
So 8 for the -C option
2021-04-30 07:04:50
That param has grown a bit organically as you can see
2021-04-30 07:06:06
Basically 0 and 1 are just shortcuts, and besides those, it is really encoding N-2
Pieter
2021-04-30 07:06:24
I see.
_wb_
2021-04-30 07:13:42
The RCTs take 3 consecutive channels (here always the first 3 but you could also do it on other channels), permute them in one of the 6 ways, and then apply one of 7 transforms, of which YCoCg is one
2021-04-30 07:14:19
2021-04-30 07:14:49
the signalled number is N-2 = rct_type
2021-04-30 07:15:02
so you divide that by 7 to get the permutation type
2021-04-30 07:15:50
and the remainder (rct_type % 7) is the kind of permutation
2021-04-30 07:17:39
so rct_type 0 (RCT 0 or RCT 2) is just RGB, while rct_type 7 (RCT 9) would be GBR, and RCT 16, 23, 30, 37 are also just permutations of RGB
2021-04-30 07:18:51
