August 2021 compo

_wb_
2021-08-21 11:21:14
Entries for August 2021 go here. Deadline: August 30. Voting day: August 31.
2021-08-21 11:50:50
Anything goes, as long as it is jxl. Obviously smaller bitstreams are more impressive.
2021-08-21 11:51:42
Winner gets the <@&878598897793114122> role. Top 3 gets added to jpegxl.info
2021-08-21 11:52:21
Submissions should include a jxl bitstream and a name of the artwork.
2021-08-21 11:54:02
You don't _have_ to use <@228116142185512960>'s https://jxl-art.surma.technology/ but it is recommended/appreciated ("open source" art is nicer than undisclosed trickery)
2021-08-21 02:02:47
Multiple entries per person are allowed. Voting is done by counting <:BlobYay:806132268186861619> emojis. You can submit entries any time between now and the deadline. You can vote on them any time until the voting day is over (in the CET time zone).
2021-08-22 05:31:55
@everyone feel free to participate! (sorry for pinging everyone but wanted to make sure everyone saw this)
2021-08-22 05:33:11
You can use art from this channel as a starting point, but of course originality matters if you want to win ๐Ÿ˜…
2021-08-23 03:09:58
Who will post the first entry? We're not going to have a compo without entries, are we?

"Please Recalibrate Your TV", 39 bytes ``` Width 1024 Height 1024 XYB Squeeze if c > 16 if x > 0 if y > 0 - Set 128 - Set 256 - Set 256 - Weighted 128 ``` This was the most garish thing I could make, don't let it win by default!
2021-08-24 08:08:24
"Cityscape Billboard", 34 bytes ``` Width 256 Height 256 Squeeze if c > 16 if x > 64 if y > 64 - Weighted 1 - Set 0 - Set 0 if x > 1 if y > 1 - Weighted 1 - Set 0 - Set 0 ```
2021-08-24 01:44:53
"Prism", 35 bytes ``` Width 512 Height 512 XYB Squeeze if c > 40 if y > 32 - Select 64 - Select -64 - Set 0 ``` I have no clue how this works! It looks neat though.

Is reacting with <:BlobYay:806132268186861619> to our own works considered cheating? No one's reacted to any of my posts, so I'm guessing that people aren't using discord threads, or my art really sucks :P
2021-08-27 01:52:36
I've also mostly just been looking at what squeeze does, it's pretty interesting to see what sort of minimalistic works you can make with it.
2021-08-27 02:08:30
"Shaded lines (trans pride edition)", 34 bytes. ``` Width 512 Height 512 Squeeze XYB if c > 8 if c > 10 - Set 0 - Gradient 64 - Gradient 8 ``` It doesn't match the flag due to having black bars instead of white as well as not being the right pattern, but I found this after trying XYB on the previous image and it worked too well to not post it.

I try to submit soon one < 128 Bytes ๐Ÿ˜†
2021-08-30 07:19:44
It could be nice to have categories like <32 bytes, <64 bytes, <128 bytes, <256 bytes, < 512 bytes, < 1024 bytes !
_wb_
2021-08-30 07:24:06
yes, good idea for the next edition
2021-08-30 07:26:14
6 categories is a bit much though, maybe <= 42 bytes, < 100 bytes, < 1000 bytes?

not sure if 32 is a good limit, you can do some things in 32 bytes but it's pretty limiting imo
2021-08-30 07:33:24
(but maybe that's what makes it interesting)

2021-08-30 07:46:13
yes it is completely different games !

2021-08-30 07:50:45
in 42 bytes you can do quite a lot already though
2021-08-30 07:52:03
let's say 32, 128, 1024
2021-08-30 07:52:24
1024 is enough to do animations
