paperboyo Now in production (Safari, Thorium etc only, obviously) 😜 https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/12/donald-tusk-second-coming-can-returning-pm-remake-poland (throttling Thorium down to Slow 3G doesn’t make this progressive very… impressive 😿 ).

Are you running the backend for The Guardian? Name is certainly fitting if so

did the images have alpha channels (doesn't matter if they are blank)? because the Chromium implementation of JXL skips doing progressive decoding if there is a alpha channel of any kind present https://discord.com/channels/794206087879852103/794206170445119489/1098950870831464448

Sorry for the hiccup: I got excited too quickly. JPEG XL is now available in supported browsers at theguardian.com.

Wow. Very cool. It does indeed load nearly instantly even when I throttle the network speed, and the network inspector says jxl :)
2024-07-26 06:41:50
It's amazing how quickly images load even on "normal 2G"
2024-07-26 06:45:56
webp was immensely slow, scanning from top to bottom, and avif would feel even slower

It takes a while on Waterfox at 2G with cache disabled, but once it's settled, scrolling is surprisingly responsive. Now if only they could spread the load more evenly so the first progressive passes were sent before the rest

what? webp is capable of any progressive decoding? I thought the entire file had to be downloaded before it can try to decode it [Hmm](https://cdn.discordapp.com/emojis/1113499891314991275.webp?size=48&quality=lossless&name=Hmm)

Simple, encode in 1 pixel rows and lazy load the image as you scroll down it in HTML

webp can load from top to bottom
2024-07-26 07:04:48
Also, the guardian can also serve webp and avif
2024-07-26 07:04:57
depending on your accept header
2024-07-26 07:06:20
Another funny thing I noticed is the avif version of that image is a higher bitrate than all other versions of it, even jpeg

2024-07-26 07:12:01
I think you need a referer header in order to get the different versions of that image

interesting, it turns out, the decoder will out right die if the file is not complete, which breaks a lot of progressive decode tests
2024-07-26 07:24:49
oh wait, nvm, firefox skill issue, as always
