RedNicStoneThat does sound quite interesting. Were looking to use an open implementation if possible however, which is why we are going to such lengths to implement it ourselfs

Open source implementation of the codec as a starting point for the FPGA?

There are a number of open source HTJ2K software implementations:

Compare to XS, J2K is much more flexible

Sorry I hadn't responded yet, it's past 12am here and ill have to take an in-depth look at this tomorrow

Looking at this on a surface level though I'm not sure this is as good of a fit for our application. Were are quite limited on the size of the IP core (must fit within 120k LUTs) but still need to deliver a high quality code stream (our current target is 4k/60 at 4:4:4, but this might change in the future). Latency is also somewhat important but J2K would probably be sufficient in that regard. We have already done some work in implementing XS, but I assume most methods are applicable to J2K also...

Thanks a lot for the extensive information you provided so far, I really appreciate that. I will have a more thorough look today, and we will have a meeting tomorrow discussing if we should go forward with using XS or switch to J2K.
